God's Self-Disclosure, Pt. 2 (Psalm 19:7)
Part of the Elders' Elective Series series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Sermon preached on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Garden Valley Chapel; Psalm 19:7
7The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
It is God's everlasting Word that the psalmist chooses to describe and he does so by highlighting its attributes.
What are they? David writes in vv. 7-9 -
7The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
8The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
Now you notice in those six statements there are six titles to Scripture -
- It's called the law
- It's called the testimony
- It's called the precepts
- It's called the commandment
- It's called the fear
- It's called the judgments
These six titles belong to the Word of the Lord. He is the author.
Then you have six characteristics of the Word -
- It is perfect
- It is sure
- It is right
- It is pure
- It is clean
- It is true
Then you have six benefits of the Word -
- It restores the soul
- It makes wise the simple
- It rejoices the heart
- It enlightens the eyes
- It endures forever
- It [produces] righteousness
These verses contain one of the most comprehensive and magnificent statements about Scripture that you will find in God's Word.
Follow along as Pastor Dave takes you to consider the first two attiributes of the Word of God in Psalm 19, verse 7.
